Cavan Policing Committee Chair says national CCTV scheme is in tatters

The Government’s CCTV Scheme is in tatters according to the Chair of the County Cavan Joint Policing Committee.

Last year, the Justice Department set up the scheme to assist groups in the establishment of community-based CCTV systems in their local areas in a bid to boost crime prevention.

Concern over the low take-up was raised at the Dáil’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) recently.

The Scheme announced was welcomed by both local TD’s and councillors at the time including Fianna Fáil Councillor John Paul Feeley.

In a statement to Northern Sound News, Councillor Feeley says between the conditions of the Scheme and the recent introduction of the GDPR regulations, the scheme is now unworkable and needs to be reformed.
