‘It’s coincidental road works are being carried in West Cavan ahead of FG Ard Fheis’

A Fianna Fáil councillor believes it’s coincidental that road works are being carried out on certain West Cavan routes ahead of the Fine Gael Ard Fheis.

Thousands of party members, including Taoiseach Leo Varadkar are expected to attend the event in the Slieve Russell hotel on November 10th and 11th.

The N87 Belturbet/Ballyconnell Road is closed for resurfacing works near the Drumlane turn-off from 9:15am to 4:15pm on week days until Friday November 3rd.

Fianna Fail councillor Paddy O’Rourke who represents Leitrim County Council spoke on today’s Joe Finnegan Show.

He believes the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar should be shown the real state of our roads.

CAVAN COUNTY COUNCIL STATEMENT:

Cavan County Council sends hedge trimming notices to landowners (particularly along busy roads such as the N87) every year around September

– October. There have been 50 such notices issued in the Cavan-Belturbet Municipal District this autumn alone. Some of these notices relate to the N87, some do not.

Regarding the current works on the N87; in June 2016, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) identified the N87 Lisnamaine to Rahaghan Pavement Overlay Scheme as a project to be progressed to construction in 2017, due to the deterioration of the existing road surface, as identified by the TII annual pavement survey.

Cavan County Council subsequently commenced the design and procurement phases of the project in late 2016, with a tender advertised in May 2017

(See:

TENDERS_SIMPLE&PS=1&PP=ctm/Supplier/PublicTenders). The works contractor was appointed in August 2017, before construction commenced on Monday 9th October.

In short, the decision to undertake these works at the present time had absolutely nothing to do with the Fine Gael National Convention due to take place in Ballyconnell.
