Department of Communications carrying out independent study into North South Interconnector

The Communications Minister says he won’t meet with local anti-pylon groups because a new study will “bring further clarity” to the costs associated with undergrounding the North-South Interconnector.

There was controversy last month when Minister Denis Naughten refused to meet with the groups, after having previously given an assurance to do so.

He says that his Department is now carrying out an undated independent study, which will examine the costs and technical issues associated with overgrounding or undergrounding the project.

Minister Naughten says he doesn’t believe further meetings are required at this time, due to the on-going work to examine the project.
