More funding needed to treat addicts locally

‘Cavan and Monaghan need more resources for their methadone clinic.’  That’s according to Tim Murphy, community supervisor at the Cavan and Monaghan Drugs and Alcohol Service.

Cavan currently sees 75 individuals from across Cavan and Monaghan accessing methadone-prescribing GPs on a weekly basis.  They’re the only two counties in Ireland that have a shared methadone service for heroin users.

However, Tim says that the waiting list in Cavan is currently about 4 or 5 months, with people waiting at a peak of 10 months for treatment.  He says many people are becoming frustrated with the long waiting times locally, and are seeking treatment elsewhere.
