Local pooches are among those vying for the title of Nose of Tralee.

The annual competition which is run by Pet Sitters Ireland aims to find the best pet in Ireland.

Dogs, cats and even birds are some of the county representatives going forward in the pageant this year.

Not to be confused with the Rose of Tralee, it runs in tandem with it and pays homage to the iconic festival.

This year the people of Monaghan have selected crossbreed Diego to represent the county.

Owner Siobhan joined Caroline Gauley on The Wider View to explain why Diago deserves to walk it:

In Cavan, Schnauzer Hugo is going forwards as the chosen one.

He was born blind in both eyes and owner Amanda says that he relies heavily on his nose.

The competition is decided by a public vote — and animal lovers have just one more week to choose their favourite before the winner is announced on August 21.
