Hope on the horizon for EU cross border funding post Brexit

There’s good news for Cavan and Monaghan as the Government has confirmed it is seeking a replacement for the PEACE and INTERREG funding streams for after Brexit.

Peace funding is funding from the EU that has been designed to support peace and reconciliation projects in the border region and north of Ireland.

Many projects in Cavan and Monaghan have been funded through PEACE and INTERREG funding.

There was concern locally that the PEACE and INTERREG funding streams would not continue after Brexit, as the UK would no longer be a part of the EU.

In the Dáil Minister Paschal Donohoe confirmed that while funding under these programmes is in place until 2020, and that the Governemnt are looking for a replacement funding stream post Brexit.

Fianna Fáil Deputy Brendan Smith says the confirmation is a relief to community groups in the local area who hope to apply for funding after that.
