LIVE UPDATES: Cavan and Monaghan being hit by Storm Ophelia

Over 3,800 homes are without power across Cavan and Monaghan this evening.  The worst affected areas are Clones, Cavan town, Killeshandra, Virginia and Lough Egish.  It’s unknown when power will be restored.

Meanwhile roads across the region are severely affected by fallen trees, poles, wires and debris.

Road closures in Monaghan include, R165 Laragh to Cootehill road, the R212 Scotshouse road in Clones at the ABP factory, the road Between Dooskey cross and Greenans Cross, the R183 Newtownbutler Road at the border and the Creevy road in Carrickmacross.

In Cavan, fallen trees have been reported on numerous roads including Lissanover in Ballyconnell, and on the N3 Dublin Road near the Glanbia facility in Virginia.

There are also reports of a number of unsafe structures and trees which are at risk of falling. Motorists are being urged to take care.  Meanwhile, Monaghan County Council says it’s ready to respond to incidents arising from the fall out of the storm after is has abated.

CAVAN

The Oldcastle to Virginia Road has now re-opened after a tree fell at St Joseph’s Nursing Home.

Tree down at the Diamond between Kingscourt and Shercock.

Tree down on the N54 between Butlersbridge and Leggykelly.

Additional trees down at Castle Saunderson and Lissanover.

Tree down and blocking road at Cabra School Kingscourt on the Shercock road. Traffic is reported to be heavy.

Cavan County Council is advising of a tree down near Lissanover, Ballyconnell.

Cavan County Council is reporting a tree down on Dublin Road N3 near Glanbia facility, Virginia.

And it says there’s a pole down at Lavey.

ESB wires across road between Crossdoney and Ballinagh. Avoid the area. The ESB has been informed.

R165 Laragh to Cootehill road blocked both ways.

Trees down on Ballyjamesduff  to Crosserlough Road and Whitegate – Mullagh Road.

Lake Road, Mullagh has dangerous broken branches suspended overhead and the road is partially blocked.

MONAGHAN

Tree down at Mullaghmore equestrian centre Tydavnet. Road blocked and not passable.

Newbliss/Scotshouse   Road two and a half miles before junction for Scarvey – Tree down

R212 Scotshouse road in Clones is closed at the ABP factory.

R165 Laragh to Cootehill road blocked both ways.

Reports of a lot of branches and debris on the N2 at Castleshane Hill.

The N2 Monaghan-Emyvale road has reopened after a tree fell on the route earlier.

Trees down between Scotstown and Ballinode – between Kilmore training pitches and Ballinode.

Trees have closed the road Between Dooskey cross and  Greenans Cross, the R183 Newtownbutler Road at border and Creevy road Carrickmacross.

PHONE AND SERVICES

The communications company Eir says over 11 thousand of its customers are without broadband, telephone and mobile services due to Ophelia.

The company says 90 of its mobile masts are out of action due to the storm.

It’s expecting the numbers affected to rise.

So far the Southwest, West and Midlands are worst hit.

EMERGENCY SERVICES

The Out-of-Hours NEDOC service will not be open to the public tonight due to Storm Ophelia.

A statement from NEDOC says “A skeleton service will be in operation from 6pm this evening to answer phones and triage calls”.

It continues by saying that patients in need of emergency care should contact the emergency services.

Normal service is expected to resume tomorrow.

The Irish College of General Practitioners, the professional and training body for Irish General Practitioners, has ask the public not to contact their GP today (Monday 16th October) unless absolutely necessary.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled and passengers are being asked to get in touch with their airlines.

While all Dublin to Holyhead sailings have been cancelled.
