“There has always been two camps within the ASTI”.
That’s according to Pat Deery, a retired teacher and ASTI member who attended the teaching union’s annual conference which took place earlier this week in Killarney in County Kerry.
Delegates from the ASTI rejected a call for strike action, which would have closed schools next month.
They also voted to withdraw from classroom substitution duties in schools from September.
Unlike other teachers, ASTI teachers are currently not being paid for classroom supervision, because of their stance outside of the Lansdowne Road Agreement.
Pat Deery spoke on the panel on today’s Joe Finnegan Show, he says teachers will always put students first especially in the lead up to exams.
