Local Sinn Féin branches seek conscience vote on abortion legislation

Local Sinn Féin branches are among 24 that have called for a free vote for TDs and Senators on the upcoming abortion legislation.

The Cavan town branch and the Brookeborough branch have made the call ahead of the party’s Ard Fheis in Belfast this weekend.

Sinn Fein’s stance of abortion will be decided at the meeting.

Leader Mary Lou McDonald wants the party to back proposed government legislation after last month’s historic vote.

At the moment the party supports terminations in the cases of rape, incest, fatal foetal abnormalities and when a mother’s life, health or mental health is at risk.

A vote an the Ard Fheis is needed to allow the parliamentary party to back the government proposals of abortion without restriction for up to 12 weeks.
