Local TD calls on the Government to expand post office services

A local TD is calling on the Government to expand post office services amid concerns over closures.

Fianna Fáil Deputy Niamh Smyth has organised a public this evening to discuss the future of the post office network.

It comes amid fears that as many as 300 post offices could face closure under a rationalisation programme.

People concerned about the future of local post offices in Cavan and Monaghan will have the opportunity to air their concerns this evening.

An Post stated recently that 265 offices including many local outlets may face closure.

However a government-commissioned report by businessman Bobby Kerr has previously indicated that up to 600 post offices are not viable.

Responsibility for the sector is currently being transferred from Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring to the Minister for Communications Denis Naughten.

Fianna Fails Communications Spokesperson Timmy Dooley will address the public meeting which is being held in Shercock Community Centre.

Deputy Dooley previously accused the minister of attempting to turn post offices into “glorified internet cafés.”

Meanwhile Deputy Niamh Smyth says this is a chance for people in Cavan and Monaghan to raise their concerns about the future of the post office network and to also speak about the role their local post office plays in their lives.

The meeting gets underway at 8pm in the Shercock Community Centre.
