Meegan with late winner as Monaghan defeat Donegal

Donal Meegan was the star of the day as he struck over his 12th point of the day deep into added time to give Monaghan a 1-21 to 3-14 victory over Donegal after an enthralling and epic encounter in Castleblayney In Division 3A in the Allianz hurling league this afternoon.

The home side had gotten off to a rip roaring start racing 1-4 to 0-1 clear after 16 minutes with Brian McGuigan netting on 8 minutes and also seeing a penalty from Hugh Byrne saved in that dominant period. Donegal though had turned it around by the interval to go in leading 1-07 to 1-6, Danny Cullen with their goal on 31 minutes.

Monaghan began their second like they had the first and with 10 minutes of the resumption they had added seven points to Donegal’s one and Trevor Hilliards side led by five. Tadhg Campbell picked up a second yellow and with it – Monaghan were put on the back foot as Donegal punished them immediately with a goal through Davin Flynn. A further goal from Ritchie Kee left it 3-11 to 1-13 as the game entered the final quarter.

It got tougher for Donegal when they were then reduced to 14 with Joe Boyle picking up a second yellow and the game swung back in favour of Monaghan. This was when Donal Meegan rose to the fore. He had played yesterday for Dundalk in their Trench cup final success in Mayo rose to the fore and a super point from Martin Murphy along with PJ Boyle had Monaghan two clear. Lee Henderson with a brace looked to have snatched the draw for Donegal until The Iniskeeen man Donal Meegan struck in injury time and Monaghan won by the narrowest of margins making it two wins from two in the opening two rounds of the league.
