Sam Moffett with James Fulton on the notes took victory in their Ford Fiesta WRC at the opening round of the Triton Showers national rally championship in Birr yesterday (Sunday).
They had all most a minute to spare over 2nd placed Declan and Brian Boyle also in a Fiesta WRC with Donagh Kelly and Monaghan’s Conor Foley 3rd in the Focus WRC.
Defending champions Roy White and James O’Brien took 4th spot and the class 7 win with Niall Maguire and Enda Sherry 2nd in that class and 6th overall.
Gary Mc Phillips with James Mc Nulty on the notes were the top modified crew in 8th overall in their Mark II escort, a little over 2 seconds ahead of Adrian Hetherington and Ronan O’Neill also in an escort.
Group N was won by David Guest and Emmet Sherry in the Mitsubishi Evo who were 10th overall, 1 place ahead of Shane Maguire and Paul McLoughlin who were the 2nd Group N crew home.
On Saturday night in the Monaghan Motor Club navigation trial Fintan Clerkin/Martin Tynan, along with Ciaran and Michael Tynan were joint winners after neither crew could be separated ending the night on 2 penalties with Laurence Keenan and Ashley Mc Adoo completing the top 3.
In the classes David Mc Crudden and Mark Deery took the semi expert honours with Conor Boylan and Mac Kierans 2nd and Andrew Wedlock/Jack Mc Kenna 3rd.
Ryan and Caolain Treanor were the best of the novices with Oisin Sherlock and Aidan Sherry 2nd and seamus Mc Tigue/Shane Dalton 3rd.
Dylan Lennon and Aaron Dixon continued their fine form by taking the beginners class ahead of Mark Mohan and Michael Carbin with Christopher Mc Mahon and Emmet Mc Cooey 3rd.
The event was a counting round of the club championship and the attention was then due to turn to the National and Squealing Pig Border championship this coming Saturday as Cavan motor club host their night trial but that event has now been postponed due to the recent heavy rain fall.
