Monaghan had one of the highest road fatality rates of all counties in 2016

It’s one year on since a fatal road traffic accident on the N2 road claimed the lives of two lorry drivers.

Klaidas Bakanas who had been living in Carrickmacross and Declan Holian from Donegal lost their lives in the accident which occurred on the N2 between Castleblayney and Carrickmacross.

That same month, a 70 year old pedestrian also lost his life on the N2.

Since January 2011 to the end of November 2016, 25 people died on the roads in cavan and 34 people in Monaghan.

Based on population, last year Longford and Monaghan had the highest road fatality rates of all counties in Ireland.

The N2 Dublin to Monaghan road has become notorious for collisions, and most recently claimed the life of secondary school teacher Mona Clarke.

Motorists are being reminded to be extra vigilant on the roads, especially in bad weather.
