A Monaghan pensioner has criticised the Government’s budget for discriminating against women who left work to care for children.
Tens of thousands of women won’t benefit from the Budget’s pensions boost. 23,000 women who left the workforce before 1994 to care for children won’t qualify for the full pension rate.
Opposition Parties have focused in on changes to the state pension which were brought in in 2012, that allow lower payments to women who have gaps in their working lives. Denis O’Higgins from Monaghan is also affected by the anomaly, as he took time out of his working life to care for a relative. But he says he and the women affected, need to stand up and take action.
