Fianna Fail’s motion on the requirement for an independent analysis of Eirgrid’s pylon project was passed in the Dail today.
The electricity project got planning approval from An Bord Pleanála before Christmas but it’s been met with controversy and disapproval from local communities since first planned.
The proposal calls on the Dail to commission an independent report, incorporating international industry expertise to examine the technical feasibility and cost of undergrounding the North-South Interconnector.
The motion also calls for an evaluation of the potential impacts of both undergrounding and over grounding the North South Interconnector on surrounding areas, considering such as local tourism, health, landscape, agriculture, heritage.
Fianna Fail Deputy Brendan Smith spoke to Northern Sound News, he says it’s the first time the Dail have called on the Government to commission an independent report in relation to the project.
