New beds to open in Virginia with staffing dispute still ongoing

Virginia Health Care Centre is opening 12 additional beds today.

There’s been controversy over the move – as they initially were due to come on stream on Monday – however the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation claimed that the facility had insufficient staff numbers.

Currently of the 56 beds available at the Virginia facility, 26 are occupied, leaving 30 vacant beds.

The HSE say that the full 56 beds will be open by April 30th and will go some way in dealing with the unprecedented level of people on trolleys within Acute Hospitals.

Frank Morrison is the Head of Social Care for the Community Health Organisation in this area.

He says the facility is expecting its first two new admissions today.

The INMO says the move by the HSE to take in patients there in a bid deal with hospital overcrowding is reckless.

Industrial relations officer with the INMO is Tony Fitzpatrick.
