Experts at Astronomy Ireland, who have been monitoring eye-witness reports, are preparing to make an announcement of its likely landing place during a public lecture in Trinity College Dublin this evening.
Up to 70,000 people saw the fireball as it crashed through the atmosphere above Ireland at around 6pm last Wednesday evening.
Initial reports suggested it had landed in the Crimlin area of Cavan, but Donegal is now considered the most likely landing place.
The space rock is estimated to carry a value of around $500 per gram.
