Opposition groups discuss proposed Interconnector with Minister Naughten

A local Fianna Fail Deputy has denied that a meeting in relation to Eirgrids proposed North South Interconnector was just a box ticking exercise for the Minister for Communications.

Minister Denis Naughten meet with the opposition groups, in relation to the North South Interconnector for the first time this morning.

Eirgrid is proposing the Interconnector to link the two electricity grids on the island, in order to ensure a stable supply both North and South.

However, people in Cavan, Monaghan and Meath have raised numerous concerns about the plan, which would see 400 pylons built across five counties.

Deputy Niamh Smyth attended this morning’s meeting in Leinster House. She says the Minister took on board all of their concerns.

Meanwhile Nigel Hillis of the Monaghan Anti Pylon Group attended this morning’s meeting with Minister Denis Naughton.

Nigel spoke to Northern Sound following the meeting, he says he is disappointed that the Minister won’t re-examine undergrounding the project depsite new developments.
