Anyone with an interest in rescuing young hens who have served their purpose on egg farms is being advised of special hen drops taking place in the Shannonside Northern Sound region today.
Littlehill animal sanctuary have been taking hens due for slaughter from farms around the country over the past number of years, and finding homes for them.
The group have recently rehomed thousands of hens that were due to be culled and they are making their final trip with the last of the poultry to Tullamore, Mullingar, Edgeworthstown and Cavan today.
They’ll be at Lidl in Cavan from 2-2.15pm.
Blathin Fitzgerald from the welfare group explains that the hens are usually slaughtered at 14 months on the farms, but they can live and continue to lay eggs for several years if they’re taken care of:
