Roscommon and Mayo beginning crucial divison one weekend tonight

The Allianz Football league resumes tonight after a break of two weeks.  For Roscommon all roads will lead to MacHale Park in Castlebar where they will face Connacht rivals Mayo.

Niall Mcinerney is a defender that the followers of Roscommon will be confident of seeing nailing down a permanent position for the next number of years.  The primrose and blue defence as a collective unit must be fairly happy with how the opening two rounds have gone. Granted they will be disappointed that they have no points on the board, however with no goals conceded then perhaps they can take satisfaction and confidence from their matches against the Ulster duo of Tyrone and Donegal.

On Saturday night it’s more familiar opposition when Kevin McStay’s men clash with their provincial rivals under the flood lights of Castlebar.  It’s a match that  Niall McInerney is looking forward to.

Roscommon’s last two matches with Stephen Rochford’s men have ended in disappointment with Roscommon tasting defeat in the Connacht FBD league and the corresponding league fixture last season in the Hyde.  So on Saturday McInerney and co would love to turn the tables on the All Ireland finalists and in the process secure some badly needed league points as Roscommon look to turn around their league season.

With Mayo having a superior physical team for Saturday the St Brigid’s defender feels his side have no choice but to play at a fast temp and avoid the big hits from a Mayo side that were defeated by Mayo in their last home match but did manger to beat Kerry in round two down in the Kingdom.

A win for Roscommon on Saturday would help to give Roscommon a major boost equally so a defeat would consign the 2015 Division Two champions to a relegation battle.  The major focus for Roscommon for 2017 is the championship however at the moment they are fully concentrating on the league and with the memories still fresh of some famous wins last year in the minds of the Roscommon players you can also sense that they would love to replicate those performances and results.
