Sinn Fein call for MPs to be given speaking rights in the Dail

A local Sinn Fein Deputy believes all newly elected MPs in the recent Westminster Elections should have speaking rights in Dáil Éireann.

Caoimhghín Ó’Caoláin and his parties seven newly elected Westminster MPs were at Leinster House yesterday demanding that their voice be heard at Leinster House.

Deputy Ó’Caoláin believes the provision of speaking rights on the floor of the Dáil was recommended by an Oireachtas committee as far back as 2003.

However, despite extensive discussions with the then Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, MPs were only given access to the Oireachtas Committee on the Good Friday Agreement.

Deputy O’Caolain spoke to Northern Sound News, he outlined why he believes all newly elected MPs including the DUP and Independent Sylvia Hermon should be given speaking rights south of the border.
