A local Councillor wants the large number of people who emigrated from Monaghan to American in the 1800’s to be remembered.
Independent Councillor Paudge Connolly wants signs erected at a junction near Tydavnet, which is known locally as American Cross, to tell more about the history of people who left the area.
There are American Crossroads dotted across the country – these were departure points for people emigrating to the US.
Councillor Connolly believes this will be a very good marketing tool for tourism, and to remember those who left Monaghan in the 1800’s hoping for a better life:
