There are over 600 young people under the age of 26 who are unemployed in Cavan and Monaghan for six months or more.
The National Youth Council of Ireland has highlighted concerns at the number, and says the disappointing figure is mirrored at national level, where over 11,700 young people are long-term unemployed. Deputy Director of the National Youth Council James Doorley, is calling on the Government to develop an action plan to reduce long term youth unemployment by half by the end of 2018.
There are 403 young people in Cavan unemployed for 6 months or more, with 211 in Monaghan. Mr Doorley says that young people don’t want to be on social welfare – they want to be working.
