Monaghan fell to a defeat to Cork in Division 1 of the Lidl national ladies football league as the Rebelletes finished strongly to win out in Saint Tiernachs Park by 2-14 to 1-12.
Cork started the better and were 1-03 to 0-03 ahead after 15 minutes with Niamh Cotter getting a goal on 5 minutes but by the 24th minute Monaghan got into the lead with 4 points in a row and two minutes into injury time Monaghan got a goal through Ciara McAnespie gave the Farney side a 1-08 to 1-06 lead at half time.
16 minutes into the second half and Monaghan were still holding the lead and were three points in front but when Rachel McKenna was yellow carded and sin binned for the home side with 13 minutes to go and over the next 10 minutes Cork outscored their opponents by 1-05 to a point. Eimear Scally nabbing the goal for Munster side and they ran out winners by 5 points.
Paula Cunningham the Monaghan manager spoke with Northern Sounds Alan Gunn after the game and she said she was bitterly disappointed and they left the game behind them. She says they’ve got to take the positives and work on the negatives and credit to Cork for getting the result.
She says they didn’t get the start they wanted but they did excellent to come back into it and lead at the break.
with one win after 5 games they’ve Donegal away and Armagh at home left and Paula explained that both games will be like a cup final and no easy games are left
