‘Ageism’ shouldn’t stop Michael D Higgins running for second term as President

Michael D Higgins wouldn’t be too old to run for another seven-year term as President.

That’s according to Packie Kelly who’s the manager of Teach na Daoine, a family resource centre in Monaghan. The starting gun has sounded earlier this week in the race to be President – but it’s unclear yet if 77-year-old Michael D Higgins will have any opposition.

So far, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Labour have backed President Higgins for another term while Sinn Féin will meet on Saturday to decide whether the party will enter a candidate to run against him. Packie Kelly spoke on today’s Joe Finnegan Show, he says the issue of ‘ageism’ shouldn’t stand in the way of Michael D Higgins when running for a second term as President.
