Calls for European-wide action on ATM security after increase in thefts

There is a call for European-wide action on ATM security after an increase in thefts last year. Since December there’ve been three ATM raids in Cavan and Monaghan, and up on 20 across Ireland.

Interpol, the European Union’s police agency says ATM thefts have increased 27 per cent across the continent in the last year. It is suggesting leaving less cash in machines and making it traceable if stolen.

The Gardai and PSNI have made their own appeals to help tackle the issue by asking heavy plant owners to secure their machines to prevent attacks.
