Calls for Monaghan to leave the Northern and Western Regional Assembly were made at the monthly Council meeting.
Councillor P.J O Hanlon argued the county is more aligned with Dublin than Galway and Council should lobby to leave the region like Co Louth had done in the past. Councillor Brian McKenna warned making a decision without formally discussing the pros and cons would be ‘jumping from the pan into the fire’ suggesting the matter was taken up at next month’s full council meeting.
However, Chief Executive Eamon O’Sullivan explained that legislation makes clear Monaghan is in the Northern and Western Assembly and they didn’t have a choice in the matter. Cllr O’Hanlon criticised the response asking if this was the case then who is representing the wants of the people of Monaghan.
