Calls for slurry spreading ban in Cavan and Monaghan to be lifted

There have been calls for the slurry spreading ban to be lifted in Cavan and Monaghan.

With the current mild and dry weather local TD Niamh Smyth and Fine Gael Councillor Richard Truell have called on the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed to lift the ban and allow farmers to benefit from the unseasonably good weather. At present, farmers aren’t allowed to spread slurry on their land until February 1st, in an aim to protect water supplies during bad spells of weather.

The Fianna Fail representative said bringing the spreading date forward is one measure that could ease life on the farm, with the Monaghan Councillor adding it could give spring grass a great boost.
