Castleblayney See Off Carrick To Make Croke Park

Castleblayney setup a trip to Croke Park after beating Carrick hurlers by on point in the All-Ireland club junior hurling championship semi-final.

The Monaghan side recorded a 1-8 to 0-10 semi-final success over Leitrim’s Carrick at TEG Cusack Park today.

Hugh Byrne’s penalty five minutes after half-time saw the Monaghan men over the line after a big come-back by the Leitrim side.

The scoreboard read 0-6 to 0-4 in favour of the Ulster champions at the end of the first-half. Clement Cunnniffe scoring all four point from free’s for Carrick.

Castleblayney’s first half scorers were Hugh Byrne 0-3 2f, Fergal Rafter 0-2 and Peter Traynor 0-1.

Clement Cunnniffe scored his fifth free of the game before the games turning point occurred with Castleblayney goalkeeper Hugh Byrne smashing home a 35th minute penalty.

Hugh Byrne and Peter Byrne both sent over from play to give Castleblayney a 1-8 to 0-6 lead on 43 minutes, however it was the last Castleblayney score of the day.

Carrick responded with another Clement Cunnniffe free before Stephen Goldrick from play, James McNabola and Cunniffe scoring from play.

However Cunniffe’s free three minutes into additional fell short for a square ball, sealing the win for Castleblayney.

Castleblayney will now meet Dunnamaggin of Kilkenny in this year’s All-Ireland Club JHC final on February 10th.
