Castleblayney woman pleads guilty to killing elderly man in 2017 crash

A woman has pleaded guilty to causing the death of an elderly Monaghan man two years ago. 24 year-old Samantha Callan of Blaeberry Walk, Castleblayney appeared before Monaghan Circuit Court.

The charge of dangerous driving causing death was in relation to an incident at Carnaveigh, Latton, Castleblayney on October 11th 2017. Pat Shannon, who was in his 80s was found on the roadside, with a car found crashed nearby.

Speaking on her behalf, senior counsel said Ms Callan wanted her regret and remorse to be passed on the family, because she hasn’t been in contact with them in case it would cause distress.

Judge John Aylmer ordered a probation and welfare report be prepared for the next sitting of the Court in October. Sentencing will commence then, when the family of Mr Shannon will deliver a victim impact statement.
