Cavan Councillors discuss controversial interconnector

Cavan Councillors and local TDs are reiterating calls for the North South Interconnector to be put underground.

A special meeting is currently underway in Cavan’s Council Chamber, to discuss the North-South Interconnector.

The cost of undergrounding the project is the main issue being discussed at the meeting today.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Clifford Kelly outlined recent studies which have shown that it is feasible to underground the project in an environmentally friendly way.

Deputy Brendan Smith then stated that Eirgrid have admitted that undergrounding would no longer cost 30 times the amount of overgrounding.

The figure is now thought to be less than twice the cost.

Local members of the Oireachtas are continuing to discuss the cost effectiveness of the proposed structure.
