He was suffering from cataracts and was blind in one eye yet was told that it would take 12-18 months to get an operation.
After turning up at the Mater Hospital in Dublin and refused to leave without seeing a doctor, he was looked at and a cataract operation was scheduled for the next week.
It was reported yesterday that the hospital crisis is worse than originally thought as 49,000 public patients have been left off official figures.
It means that the true number of patients who are in the queue for procedures is over 130,000.
