Cavan and Westmeath will have to do it all again next weekend after they finished level in the Lidl Ladies division 2 football final in Parnell Park this afternoon. It finished Cavan 0-15 Westmeath 2-09
In the third minute it was Aisling Doonan that got the first point of the game for Cavan after great work from Donna English. We were all square with Karen McDermott finding the range for Westmeath in the fifth minute. The next ten minutes belonged to Cavan with 5 points in a row before Westmeath battled back with a goa from Ciara Blundell but Cavan recovered and finished the half with two more points and they led at the interval by 0-08 to 1-02.
Both sides were evenly matched at the start of the second half and after 11 minutes Cavan had a 0-13 to 1-06 lead after a Catriona Smith point. Westmeath were never put away and with six minutes to go Ciara Blundells second goal reduced the deficit to just one point. in a frenetic finish to a fantastic game Maud Annie Foley got a point for Westmeath and we were level with 2 minutes to play and that’s how it finished with the replay taking place next week.
Aidan McCabe the Cavan manager spoke with Shannonsides Northern Sounds Mickey Brennan after the game and he says it was a 7 to 7.5 out of ten performance and ‘if it takes us another 60 minutes next week so be it’.
‘its frustrating that bar the second goal every time Westmeath asked a question of us we had the answer for them’ He also outlined that ‘overall he was ‘quite happy’ with how they did.
