Cavan and Westmeath will face each other for a place in division one next season when they replay their division 2 final in Birr on Sunday at 4pm.
It finished Cavan 0-15 Westmeath 2-09 . The match started well for Cavan and in the third minute Aisling Doonan that got the first point of the game. We were all square with Karen McDermott finding the range for Westmeath in the fifth minute. The next ten minutes belonged to Cavan with 5 points in a row before Westmeath battled back with a goal from Ciara Blundell but Cavan recovered and finished the half with two more points and they led at the interval by 0-08 to 1-02. Both sides were evenly matched at the start of the second half and after 11 minutes Cavan had a 0-13 to 1-06 lead after a Catriona Smith point. Westmeath were never put away and with six minutes to go Ciara Blundells second goal reduced the deficit to just one point. In a frenetic finish to a fantastic game Maud Annie Foley got a point for Westmeath and we were level with 2 minutes to play and that’s how it finished.
Ahead of the rematch the Cavan manager Aidan McCabe spoke with Shannonside Northern Sounds Kevin McDermott. He outlined that they played good football and that they left them off the hook slightly with their fifteen wides and he has every confidence in Cavan on Sunday.
He explained that they’ve no injury concerns and they expect Westmeath to show great resilience again on Sunday. The Cavan manager is also looking for a good crowd to make their way to Birr on Sunday.
