Ceire Smith Advances At World Boxing Championship

Cavan flyweight Ceire Smith saw off Bulgaria’s European Elite bronze medallist Gabriela Dimitrova on a 3-2 split – 30-27, 30-37, 29-28 – 27-30, 28-29, after three close rounds in the flyweight class.

Smith will now face Namiki Tukimi of Japan in Monday’s last-16 round. Tukimi saw off Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu on a split 26:29, 27:28, 29:26, 28:27, 28:27.

While Castlerea middleweight Aoife O’Rourke made it three wins from three for Ireland at the World Women’s Championships in New Delhi, India this morning.

O’Rourke, making her World Elite debut at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, scored a landslide 30-36, 30-25, 30-26, 30-27, 30-25 win over Ya Chu Yang of Taipei.

Yang took three standing counts in the second and third rounds with O’Rourke dominating, to set up a last 16 bout with Lauren Price of Wales on Monday.

Price had received a bye in the preliminary round.

Michaela Walsh and Amy Broadhurst are in action in the second session which begins at 12.30pm (Irish time).
