Concern new rates valuations could force local petrol stations to close

There’s a warning that many rural filling stations across Cavan and Monaghan could face closure because of a dramatic increase in their rates bills.

The Valuation Office is currently carrying out a revaluation of rates in the Northern Sound region, with letters being sent to businesses outlining the new valuation to be used from next year.

However, the new calculation used for filling stations sees their turnover used, rather than the square footage of the business. One Cavan filling station told Northern Sound today that they were facing a 300 per cent increase in their rates from 2020.
