Concerns raised over the reopening of Bawnboy Garda Station

A local councillor says that the reopening of Bawnboy Garda station will only be beneficial if it has a permanent Garda, and is operational 24/7. Fianna Fáil Councillor Sean Smith has been speaking following the announcement yesterday that the process to re-open 6 former Garda stations, including Bawnboy, has officially begun.

The acting Garda Commissioner has decided to re-open stations at Stepaside and Rush in Dublin; Leighlinbridge in Co. Carlow; Donard in Co. Wicklow; Ballinspittle in Co. Cork and Bawnboy in County Cavan. The process is still in the early stages and there is no timeline yet for the opening of any of the six stations. Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show today, Councillor Smith says that the reopening of the station will help no one if it is only operational on a part time basis:

Meanwhile the GRA representative for the Cavan/Monaghan Garda Division is James Morrisroe. He outlines his concerns following the announcement that Bawnboy station is to be reopened.
