€3bn National Broadband plan to be signed off in the coming weeks

The cabinet’s going to be asked to sign off on the €3bn National Broadband Plan despite it costing five times the original estimate.

It was initially priced at €500m but earlier this month it was confirmed that the cost has escalated to €3bn

Political leader of the Irish Times, Pat Leahy, said the government is due to approve the plan within the coming weeks. Speaking to Northern Sound News he said while the plan is more expensive than envisaged, any alternative plan to deliver broadband to rural areas will be very expensive
