Fine Gael has decided to only run two candidates in Cavan and Monaghan at the next general election.
Heather Humphreys and Joe O’Reilly will contest the next election but at the recent selection convention, party officials said a third candidate would be added to the ticket.
The party’s now said there isn’t a strong enough candidate to consider running a third person in Cavan-Monaghan.
The party was thought to have approached a number of potential candidates, including Cavan footballer Seanie Johnson.
A party representative has said if there was to be an election soon, the strategy would be to run just the two chosen candidates.
At the convention, west Cavan councillor Peter McVitty withdrew his name from the selection, saying he would rather see a new face on the ballot paper.
