GAA Congress with a difference this weekend

The Gaelic Players Association has asked the GAA to remove a motion on cynical fouling from tomorrow's remote Congress.

The Players' body say that 70 percent of inter county hurlers and 54 percent of footballers are opposed to the introduction of a sin bin and the awarding of a penalty for cynical fouls inside the 20 metre line and its arc.

The GPA wants the motion to be properly debated.

Also up for discussion will be the proposal off a split GAA season that would commence in 2022 and see the All Ireland football and hurling finals been played in July.

The dramatic changes to the fixtures calendar last year and the possibility that it will happen again this year due to Covid 19 restrictions, looks like seeing this proposal been passed.

While a motion to limit senior club championships to 16 teams is sure to generate some debate, especially in counties were competing clubs would be above the 16 threshold.

47 motions in total have been forwarded for discussion with 10 of those been held over for a Special Congress that the Association hope to host towards the end of the year, when delegates could be in attendance.

The Congress will also see New York's Larry McCarthy take up the role as the 40th president of the Association replacing the out going John Horan.
