Gaoth Dobhair Land Ulster Title over Scotstown

Scotstown fell to a one point AIB Ulster Club SFC Final defeat as Gaoth Dobhair won their first ever title with a 0-13 to 0-12 after extra-time at Healy Park.

The Seamus McFerran Cup heads for Donegal for the first time since 1975, after a gripping decider which for long spells it looked as if Scotstown would land the championship.

The sides were level on five occasions in the first half, Shane Carey finding three Scotstown points, as the sides went in deadlocked at five points each at half-time.

Scotstown burst into spectacular action with three points after the restart, two from Carey and a brilliant McCarthy effort put them clear.

Odhran MacNiallais and Daire O’Baoill lifed their game, Gaoth Dobhair chipped away at the deficit, and Cassidy added to his tally, with MacNiallais and substitute James Carroll adding scores from placed balls.

Going into the final four minutes, Scotstown were clinging on to a two point’s margin, but MacNiallais stent over two late scores to draw the side’s level at 11 points each.

They remained inseparable midway through extra-time, with just a point each added, but Scotstown went down to 14 men following the straight red card to Shane Carey.

Gaoth Dobhair substitutes James Carroll and Shane Ferry who combined for the winner, with Ferry slotting over the most valuable score of his career. Rory Beggan had a chance to send it to a further spell of extra-time, but his 50 metre free dropped short.
