Garda Commissioner says he shares Maurice McCabe’s views on policing

The Garda Commissioner says Maurice McCabe did a service for the force and for Ireland as a whole.

Maurice McCabe came to prominence in 2014 when he raised the cancellation of penalty points by members of the Gardaí, without following proper procedures.

The whistle blower retired last week after the Disclosures Tribunal found there had been a smear campaign against him around the time of his appearance at the Public Accounts Committee.

It was carried out by former Commissioner Martin Callinan and former Garda Press Officer Superintendent David Taylor.

McCabe has been praised for blowing the whistle on the issues. Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Commissioner Drew Harris also praised Maurice McCabe’s work:
