Gardaí could be brought in to police speed in housing estates.
It comes as councillors in the Cavan/Belturbet Municipal District highlighted concerns that speed was a major issue in Cavan town and the surrounding areas.
Farnham Street in the town was highlighted as a particular black spot for speed.
Meanwhile Sinn Féin Eugene Greenan indicated that most housing estates in Cavan were ‘crying out’ for speed ramps to slow down traffic.
The area engineer said that speed ramps were an expensive solution to slowing people down – and are very unpopular amongst motorists.
Instead he said the option of introducing a 30kmph speed limit in housing estates could be looked at, with the Gardaí helping to enforce it.
