Gardaí in Co Monaghan are investigating the robbery of an ATM and cash from a bank in Ballybay at around 3am this morning.
A digger was used to break a hole in the wall of the Bank of Ireland on the main street and remove the ATM machine before it was driven away on the back of a trailer.
It’s understood at least three men were involved in the incident, however, it remains unclear how much money was stolen.
The digger was towed to the scene by a tractor and trailer, which was then used to remove the ATM from the wall of the bank and a large SUV – possibly a Toyoto Land Cruiser, with a trailer was used to carry it from the scene in the direction of Cootehill or Carrickmacross.
The tractor was then burned out and left at the scene.
The scene has been preserved pending a forensic examination and traffic diversions are in place.
Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Carrickmacross Garda Station.
