The government has spent €1.2 billion on buying privately built homes during the housing crisis, according to the Sunday Independent.

Since 2011, €218 million has been spent on buying 974 units for social housing in Dublin City.

Meanwhile, in the Shannonside region – €16 million has been spent on buying 122 units in Longford, €5 million for 55 units in Leitrim, and €9 million on buying 77 units in Roscommon.

Separately, Cavan County Council has spent €12 million on buying 115 units, while €27 million has been spent on buying 202 units in Monaghan.

The new housing data was compiled by Fianna Fail using the Freedom of Information Act.
