‘Ground rents are a hangover from colonial times and must be abolished’

‘Ground rents are a hangover from colonial times and must be abolished.’

That was the call of Sinn Fein councillor Noel Keelan who raised the issue at the most recent meeting of Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Municipal District.

Much of one side of the Main Street in Carrickmacross pay ground rents to the Shirley estate, – on top of paying their business rates.

He proposed that they call on Oireachtas members for Cavan and Monaghan to attend a meeting with Municipal District Councillors and representatives of the Shirley Tenants Action Group, to discuss the issue.

The motion received cross party support.
