The increase to property tax in Cavan "wasn't a decision taken lightly".

Fine Gael Councillor TP O'Reilly has been defended Cavan County Council's decision to increase the rate of Local Property tax by 15 per cent for 2021.

It means 97.8 per cent of households would pay less than €4 extra per month, and provide the local authority with an additional €680,000 in income.

Chief Executive Tommy Ryan recommended the increase, which was proposed by Shane P O'Reilly, seconded by Brendan Fay and received unanimous support.

The move has been widely criticised on social media, but speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound News, TP O'Reilly said his party believe it's right.
