There were 43 roads closed across Co. Monaghan due to flooding caused by recent storms.
That's according to the Chief Executive of Monaghan County Council, Robert Burns.
Mr. Burns addressed Monaghan County Councillors at a full meeting of the council on Monday (February 9th).
He explained that several rural communities were isolated due to the storm, with the south and the west of Co. Monaghan worst affected.
At the meeting, emergency motions were put forward by both the Sinn Féin Group and the Fine Gael Group in relation to the flooding, and road repairs.
Speaking to Northern Sound, Ballybay - Clones Cllr. Sinead Flynn outlined the importance of flood prevention funding.
Cllr. Flynn said: "There were numerous road closures around the county. Up around Laragh, Ballybay, Doohamlet, Lough Egish, those areas were effected.
"I know we weren't effected as badly as the south, and in the south of Ireland. But still, we have had a lot of damage caused by Storm Chandra.
"Some of those roads may not have flooded, but we do need the additional funding. This funding is essential to ensure we aren't back here again.
"We know the rain levels are increasing, this will continue- unfortunately, the rain is here to stay. So we must be prepared for all weather events, and not just reacting after damage is done," Cllr. Flynn added.
Meanwhile, Fine Gael councillor Pauraic Clerkin highlighted that roads across the county are already in need of repair.
He noted that although 43 roads were closed, a lot more were damaged by recent rain.
Cllr. Clerkin told Northern Sound: "A lot more roads were damaged. We're still counting for the cost of that storm. As everybody knows we've had heavy rain throughout the month of January, we're into the middle of February.
"It has caused severe damage to tour roads, its causing pot holes, causing verges to collapse. In some cases roads instead of potholes, they're like craters.
"I've been inundated with calls about damage caused to vehicles," Cllr. Clerkin added.
