84 commencement notices have been issued by local authorities in the Northern Sound region so far this year.
A commencement notice is a notification to the council that building works are starting. The 84 notices for this year is a significant reduction on the same period last year. Between January and May 2024, 536 commencement notices were issued in Cavan and Monaghan. 371 of these were in Cavan and 165 in Monaghan. This year, 30 notices have been issued in Monaghan, and 54 in Cavan. All of the commencements in Monaghan this year have been for single houses. While in Cavan, 33 notices were for scheme houses, and the rest for one-off houses. No apartments are currently under construction in Cavan or Monaghan according to the data.
Nationally, 4,969 commencements have been issued so far this year, a substantial reduction on the same period last year, where 32,851 notices were issued.
