Local TD Brendan Smith said he was shocked to hear of the loss of 10 cattle on a Co Cavan farm on Friday last due to lightning.
The one-year-old heifers died on a farm in Butlersbridge on Friday evening when lighting struck a tree that they were under at the time.
Deputy Smith said it must have been a terrible shock for the famer to come along. Met Éireann had issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for the county, which was valid until 6pm yesterday evening.
The ten suckler-bred heifers, owned by a farmer from the area, are understood to have taken shelter from the heavy rain under a tree in the middle of the field.
A bolt of lightning then struck the earth, killing them instantly. Speaking to Northern Sound, Deputy Smith said it was a terrible loss for the farmer.
